 Activities
Here are some of the many things you can do or see while visiting us.
- Ocean
Tela Bay is just the perfect temperature for year round swimming. The a.m. surf is gentle; waves generally reach three feet, which is good for body surfing. The p.m. surf gets white caps due to a daily off-shore breeze.
- White Sandy Beaches
The climate at El Cocal seems to defy weather predictions in that in vast regions of the country, it can be raining and here it will be blue skies. The weather is almost always a constant and incredible, pleasant surprise. December through February the temperatures will drop slightly by a few degrees in the evening. Sometimes in June, July, and August; El Cocal gets squalls from the ocean in the late afternoon providing brief but welcome showers.About a mile down the beach is a beach club (Plantation Shores) with a pool and restaurant. Keep walking and you'll get to San Juan and eventually Tela. Walk in the other direction and you'll get to Tornabe (local eateries), Miami, and eventually Punta Sal with its hidden lagoons.
- Snorkeling
Great snorkling at Punta Sal and adjacent "hidden" lagoons and near Triunfo point.
- Kayak
Numerous ocean trips from one-hour fun trips to six hours or more. We have explored the nearby lagoons, which also make for great sight-seeing. White water trips are available with local outfitters.

- Bottom Fishing with large sinker and cut bait.
- Hiking or Jogging
Miles and miles of white sand beaches provide some of the best beach walking or running anywhere. Two nearby Garifuna villages provide opportunities to learn how the local people live and play. Be sure to buy the fresh baked coconut bread and play a pick-up soccer game.
- Lancetilla
Lancetilla is a botanical garden 10 minutes away and is the second largest tropical garden in the world. Established in 1926 under the direction of world reknown tropical horticulturist Dr. Wilson Popenoe. This garden boasts a large variety of tropical plants from around the world. Trails, river swimming holes and bamboo forests, are a must see.
- Golf
There is a nine-hole course 15 minutes away from El Cocal House. Please note that availability is not always reliable.
